Abuse Prevention Training Program for Long Term Care Staff

Competence with CompassionAbuse prevention is a primary concern of competent caregivers and reputable care facility managers. Developing an abuse prevention strategy requires a multifaceted approach, with support from all levels of care staff and facility administration. This video and print curriculum take a dynamic, practical and engaging approach to abuse prevention. The concepts are presented in a straightforward manner with an emphasis on group discussion and practice. Throughout the training, participants are encouraged to share specific, day-to-day examples of challenging caregiver situations. Trainees are given the opportunity to work together to generate possible interventions based upon information and skills acquired from each training module.

Ethical Decision-Making in the Changing Culture of Long Term Care

Competence with Compassion™: Ethical Decision-Making in the Changing Culture of Long Term Care is a groundbreaking train-the-trainer program designed to help long term care professionals arrive at ethical solutions to the wide array of dilemmas encountered daily in the provision of care. It differs from other ethical training programs in offering both a new and useful way of framing the particular ethical commitments of long term care providers and a 5-step process to guide decision-making when ethical dilemmas arise. It has benefited from input from care providers at every stage of its development to produce a training that reflects current understandings of the ethical dimensions of both giving and receiving long term care across settings. The training package addresses different adult learning styles and includes a comprehensive four-module train-the-trainer program plus a PowerPoint CD, a DVD with two trigger videos, and background reading for the trainer.

Universal Core Curriculum for Direct Care Workers in Long Term Care

The Universal Core Curriculum (UCC) is a 60-hour training program designed for potential direct care workers. The goal of the training is to equip those new to the field of direct care with the information and person-centered skills that will prepare them for a work experience that is rewarding for consumers, themselves, and their co-workers. It is intended as a first step in an education program that supports and advances the development of the direct care worker by providing basic skills common to all long term care work settings. The curriculum consists of six modules, each focused on a particular consumer and different long term care setting. The consumers’ stories capture a range of cultures, ages, abilities, and care issues. The UCC uses adult learning principles and emphasizes making information relevant by illustrating how it is used to assist consumers.  Click here for an overview of module topics and learning objectives.
