CARIE Elder Abuse Prevention Training Selected for World Health Organization Initiative!!

We are thrilled to share the news that CARIE’s Competence with Compassion™: An Elder Abuse Prevention Training Program for Long Term Care Staff is one of 89 interventions recognized by the World Health Organization as evidencing promise to prevent and respond to abuse of older persons. Identified through a rigorous search and screening of nearly 14,000 scientific studies, the 89 interventions are included in a database, the first product of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing’s Intervention Accelerator initiative on  elder abuse.

A Rich Repository of Evidence-Based Interventions”

Dr. Etienne Krug, Director of the World Health Organization’s Department of Social Determinants of Health, described WHO’s new database as “a critical first step towards developing and scaling up cost-effective solutions to address abuse of older people, which has been highlighted as one of five priorities to tackle the issue during the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030).” The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing Intervention Accelerator is a WHO-led international network of experts working to develop a portfolio of effective approaches to address elder abuse. It will build on the database to create a portfolio of interventions, supported by high-quality evidence, that can be implemented and scaled up globally to prevent and respond to the abuse of older people.

CARIE’s Long Term Care Abuse Prevention Training Program

CARIE has a decades-long history of leadership in the fight against elder abuse, both as an advocate and through program development. Competence with Compassion™ was the first elder abuse prevention training for long term care staff to demonstrate effectiveness in changing staff attitudes toward older adults and reducing abuse. It has been presented and replicated nationally and internationally and was selected to receive the American Society on Aging and Brookdale Center on Aging Best Practices Award and the American Public Health Association’s Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation.

We are honored by the World Health Organization’s recognition of Competence with Compassion™: An Elder Abuse Prevention Training Program for Long Term Care Staff as a significant contributor to the international effort to eradicate abuse of older persons.
